QRDocs is a quick'n'dirty Android QR-code scanning app that integrates with Google Sheets through Google Forms. Designed to track hardware production work-in-process, it was developed from concept to implementation in under 24 hours — and at no marginal cost — for the smart-eyewear startup Tzukuri.
Scaling a hardware company from a prototyping laboratory to full production involves keeping track of increasing quantities of both work-in-process and finished product. But, as is usually the case with startups, both time and money were scarce. From the initial research request to the start of full implementation, this project took less that 24 hours. It used pre-loved Android phones as scanner handsets for an app coded in Java, and integrated through Google Forms with the company's existing prototype production management system. This simple, cheap, quick solution proved immediately effective in nearly eliminating misplaced WIP and finished product, and allowed for the construction and analysis of detailed process metrics.
